“Turn your knitting needles into poverty fighting needles!”
The good folks at Oxfam have mounted an amazing campaign:
We’re calling on knitters everywhere to turn their knitting needles into poverty fighting needles by creating a patch for Oxfam’s giant baby blanket – a ‘visual petition’ we’re handing in to world leaders in September 2008, demanding that they honour their promises to make sure mums in poor countries get the maternal health care they need.
Each square of the blanket will represent a pregnant woman who would have survived to care for her baby, if she had received the medical care she needed.
Every minute, a woman with no medical care dies in pregnancy or childbirth. Millions of mums in poor countries get low-quality health care, or are forced to go without it altogether.
Oxfam is aiming for 250,000 patches – and what an arresting vision that will be!
