Icelandic composer uses knitting pattern to write score

Not so long ago, knitting was a near-obsolete craft skill, exercised only by doughty aunts. But something stirred in the purlieus of tricot: suddenly, knitting became not just the hobby of chic young urbanites, but an occupation with intellectual heft. Websites sprang up on mathematical knitting (woollythoughts.com). And in 2008, a young Icelandic composer was knitting a shawl when an idea struck her.
