Experimenting with Inked Fabric Markers: Embroidery, Flexi Hoops, Robots and more!

Today my husband Collin (@motodouma) and I had a breakfast date with Inked by Blackcat Permanent Fabric Markers. *

I decided to experiment with 100% cotton fabric (I cut up a white handkerchief) and some flexi hoops to see what I could come up with. Here’s the process:

And that was so much fun, I did another – a little homage to Yoko Ono and John Lennon.

I really like straight, clean lines, so for me taping was ideal. The ink generally did not bleed unless I accidentally pressed too hard or slipped under the tape and even then, the bleed was minimal and hardly noticeable.

Here’s an example of what I mean on a canvas bag:

I’m still deciding what to embroider on that one. Got an idea?

Collin went completely the other way. He sketched out his drawing with a marking pen and then went to town – he blended and he layered, all by hand and without using any tape (except to secure the corners of the fabric to the table). He used a 100% cotton handkerchief and you can see the results are great. He said he was suprised and pleased that the markers were easy to control.

All in all, for under $15 Inked by Blackcat Permanent Fabric Markers are good value for what you get. I will definitely keep using them – I love having a new tool in my craft aresenal.

One caveat: There’s no purple in this set! Personally, I didn’t care to have two blues, and would have preferred to have a purple! (I made the purple you see in the rainbow bag by layering the light blue, pink and fuchsia.
