Channing Hansen Knits Stunning Self-Portraits Based on His Own DNA
Please note that this piece was published in 2017. You can see new work by Channing here.
I caught “Channing Hansen: Self Portraits” exhibit in New York last week and it’s fantastic – totally worth the visit if you’re close to the city, but hurry – it’s at CRG Gallery and closes on February 25th.
Here are some photos I took of many of the pieces:
“Hansen uses fiber mostly derived from ‘conservation breeds’ of sheep, as well as synthetic materials. He cleans, dyes, spins and sometimes shears the wool that he knits into organic, often unwieldy, forms stretched over virtually bare wooden stretchers. Despite the seemingly erratic movements in dimension and color, the knits are structured, or circumscribed by a systematic model: Hansen’s own DNA.”

Thanks so much for posting about this exhibit! The work is so beautiful and inspiring.
