I have a thing for wooden spoons. I love cooking with them, I love looking at them, and I love serving with them — they feel so natural in my hands and they LOOK SO GOOD.
So when I was given a set of Spurtle Wooden Spoons from LR Naturals to review, I was really excited to give them a whirl. I’ve never used a spurtle before and wanted to know more about them. Hailing from 15th-century Scotland, the dowel-shaped spurtle was the original go-to tool for whisking porridge back in the day. Today it’s used for much more … so handy!
It should be noted that there are two different types of spurtles: the dowel-shaped version mentioned above, and the American kind, best described as a spoon/spatula hybrid. The ones I’m reviewing look like the latter, like this:
Reasonably priced, this four-piece flat-bladed spatula set from LR Naturals comes with a 13-inch slotted spurtle, and 13”, 10” and 9” spoons. The quality is excellent, the wood (beechwood) is smooth and soft to the touch, yet sturdy and durable.
It’s a very versatile tool – you can use a spurtle for serving, scraping, stirring, spreading, salad-tossing, mixing batter (even heavy doughs), and much more. It’s really a unique utensil with a fascinating back-story.
On the practical side, I don’t know about you, but I’m always a little worried about using metal or plastic utensils when I’m cooking. I don’t want the metal to scratch my pots and pans and more importantly from a health-perspective, I’m always leery about the combination of heat and plastic or silicone. With natural wood, you don’t have to worry about any of that at all, thankfully.
This spurtle set is backed with a 1-year limited warranty and to take care of them, you just wash with mild soap (I like castile soaps for this kind of thing) and lukewarm water. You don’t want to soak them or put them in the dishwasher, but you can treat them with a food grade mineral oil to maintain them.
If you’re looking for a unique yet traditional gift that’s reasonably priced and very high-quality, this is a good bet. With such an interesting history, it’s truly the perfect offering for a wedding or housewarming gift, and if you have a friend who’s a chef or just loves to cook, this is really a no-brainer.
