Copyright Guidelines for Crafters – Infographic for Crafty Knithacker-Types Like Us!
Copyright, by definition, is the legal right given to an originator to publish, print, perform, film or record literacy, artistic or musical material. This means that if you take anything that isn’t yours for your own, you will be sued. You can ask for copyright permission to use something, but this is not always granted and often there is a sum of money you must pay to be allowed this.
This is a great cheat sheet for crafters, and if you want to better understand the ins and outs of the infographic above, Ginger Davis Allman does a deeper dive at The Blue Bottle Tree and distills topics such as: copyright, patent, trademark, international copyright, fair use, tutorials/classes, inspired-by and derivative works, licensed characters, dealing with infringements, social media and more.
If you want to know what you can and can’t do, start with Ginger’s great overview.
