How did you connect the icord pieces together? Thanks!

Hi! I found your rug on Pinterest. I am making a similar one and have a question: how do you keep it flat when you sew it up? Mine has turned out as more of a large knitted bowl. It’s kind of cool and I may try and make some smaller ones of those on purpose later, but I don’t really have a use for such a large one. (It’s supposed to be a nice cushy rug for in front of the kitchen sink, about a four-foot diameter.) I’m thinking maybe I just coiled and/or sewed it too tightly? Thanks in advance for any help you are able to provide.
