Review: The Orthopedic Donut Cushion by Ergonomic Innovations – Helpful For Knitters!

For most of the day, I’m sitting. Whether I’m happily knitting or blogging or doing client work, sitting in an office chair makes up a significant part of my life. Luckily my son goes to school about a mile away, so I do get about 12,000 steps in every day – that’s something!

But the sitting – it affects my posture and at the end of some days, my lower back and tailbone often give me grief. So when I was given the opportunity to try an orthopedic cushion, I thought, what the heck, why not.
Meet the Orthopedic Donut Cushion by Ergonomic Innovations:

My first impressions are positive. The packaging is great and the cushion is actually a bit smaller than I imagined, which is a good thing. The pillow feels firm and the cover is smooth and velvety (it easily zips on and off for maintenance, washing, etc), and I like that it has non-slip grips on the underside.

Here are a couple of photos of it on my standard-size office chair – it really looks like a donut, hence the name.

So let’s give it a try…

When I first sit down, I notice I’m sitting higher and need to make a few adjustments with my monitor and keyboard position – no problem. I also notice that I’m sitting straighter without much effort to do so and everything feels a little more aligned. I also can’t fall back on lazy sitting habits like leaning forward or pulling my knees up to my chest. After a few hours of sitting with the cushion, I notice that because my weight is better distributed, there’s less strain on my lower half. Already in a few hours, I can see this cushion is helping. The only small drawback is getting used to having something on my chair – it’s a mental adjustment to make and I’m sure it will happen over time as I use it more.

If you’re like me and you’re sitting for long periods of the day, give the Orthopedic Donut Cushion by Ergonomic Innovations a try. It’s a low-risk investment for the price and because it’s portable, you can easily use it not only with your office chair, but in a car, wheelchair, airplane, train, bus … wherever you sit and knit!
