Hermit crab “moms” release their eggs into the ocean, where they hatch into tiny, free-swimming larvae called zoeae. These larvae spend several weeks in the water, undergoing molts as they develop into a megalopa, which resembles a tiny lobster with an early shell. The megalopa then finds a suitable shell and moves onto land, eventually growing into a juvenile hermit crab.
