European goldfinches are fascinating little birds! Their most striking feature is their beautiful plumage – they have a bright red face mask, black and white head, and golden wing patches that flash when they fly, giving them their name. These birds are remarkably intelligent and were historically kept as pets because they could be taught to perform tricks, like pulling up tiny buckets of water to drink.
