Review: Get Your Yarn & Craft Stash Organized With Sortly, the Handy Inventory App

Have you ever wanted to maintain a simple inventory of ALL your craft supplies? I have an app for you! It’s called Sortly and it’s free for everyone to use.
This is a great app to use if you are trying to get organized ahead of selling at your first craft fair. Available for the iPhone and iPad, once you download the app from the Apple App Store, it’s super easy to get started. Using Sortly is fairly intuitive, but if you get stuck, they have a really great support page. After creating an account and getting familiar with the basic features, I created several top-level folders for my yarn inventory. I started with Acrylic Yarn, Cotton Yarn, Specialty Yarn and Wool. I’ll go back to add more folders later … so many folders.

You can create further hierarchies within the folders. So for example, if we drill down into my Specialty Yarn folder, you can see in the screenshot below that I created a secondary folder for my beaded yarn, which contains seven items.

And if we dig into the beaded yarn folder, we find a list of all my beautiful beaded silk yarn. From this screen, you can see the quantity for each listing, related tags and each item’s value, which is handy to know, especially if you’re running a craft business or handmade goods side hustle.

Setting up individual items couldn’t be easier. Once you’ve snapped a photo, set up the title and tags, add notes and a variety of other details. Since everything is searchable, you could use the notes field to log specific data such as dye lots, yarn weights, colorways and more.

Some other useful features include:
- a basic image-editor
- cloud support
- the ability to link to Dropbox and Evernote accounts for easy sharing
- use across multiple devices
- built-in search functionality
- reminders
The free version of Sortly is great for personal use, but if you want to unlock a few more features, like secure cloud storage for example, the Plus version is worth reviewing. You can try a Free Trial of Sortly Plus for 14 days to get all the features for free.
Have fun and organize smarter with Sortly!

on July 28, 2020 at 11:05 pmHow about a version for Android or, better yet, Windows 10? I would rather keep track of stuff on my home desktop computer but my tablet (android) is my second choice and I’m getting SOOOOOOOOO tired of seeing every program I’d like to have listed for apple products only!!

on March 24, 2021 at 11:40 pmCan you scan the upc and auto populate the inventory? I want to do minimal data entry by hand if possible.
