For some reason, blocking is one of the great mysteries of knitting … but it doesn’t have to be! Recently I was given the opportunity to try a set of Red Suricata Blocking Mats and I thought it would be a great opportunity to show how blocking a project can make the difference between a piece looking just great and a piece looking totally awesome.

Below is an entrelac scarf that I’ve been working on for awhile. It’s years in the making and I’m excited to finally finish it to show off one day soon … but as you can see, those curled edges are annoying – it badly needs blocking!

In the image below you can see I’ve started to block it with the stainless steel t-pins that come with the Red Suricata Blocking Mats set. For the purposes of this post, I’m just going to block a portion of the right side, so you can see the difference that blocking makes. I like to use a spray bottle to dampen the area I’m blocking. You don’t need a lot of moisture for it be effective.

Let it dry, remove the pins and voila – it looks like a new piece! Blocking really does make a big difference.
